{"id":17709,"date":"2020-02-15T14:12:59","date_gmt":"2020-02-15T13:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/?p=17709"},"modified":"2023-12-07T12:16:55","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T11:16:55","slug":"force-any-ios-app-to-use-dark-mode-with-shortcuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/?p=17709","title":{"rendered":"Force Any iOS App to Use Dark Mode, with Shortcuts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A few apps on iOS do not support dark mode\u2013in my case it concerns five apps, some I often use: my bank app, Antidote FR\/EN dictionaries, my mobile carrier and Apple\u2019s own \u201cApple Store\u201d app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple\u2019s Shortcuts\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/shortcuts\/id915249334\">free in the App Store<\/a>\u2013comes with a neat feature called <strong>Automation<\/strong> that can force those apps to use dark mode, well <em>kinda<\/em> by automatically turning Smart Invert on each time you launch one of those apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s great is that you need not be a geek to use Shortcuts. You just need to tell it what to do, and when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When, Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already done so, install Shortcuts and launch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tap the <strong>Automation<\/strong> button at the bottom of the screen. In the new windows tap the <strong>+<\/strong> sign, in the top right corner of the screen\u2013it amazes me how Apple, and many third-party app devs, are trying their best to make us tap absolutely everywhere on the screen <em>save<\/em> where our hands are most likely to be: near the bottom of the screen. But I digress.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Create Personal Automation<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Select <strong>Open app<\/strong> (it\u2019s the last one in the list).<\/li><li>In the <strong>When<\/strong> section, select every app you want to force into dark mode (you can always edit your selection later on), and tap <strong>Next<\/strong>\u2013yeah, the <em>tiny <\/em> Next sitting in the top right corner of the small window, in the middle of the screen.<\/li><li>Tap <strong>Add Action<\/strong> and use the search to pick <strong>Smart Invert<\/strong>. <\/li><li>Last step, uncheck <strong>Ask before running<\/strong> if you don\u2019t Shortcuts to ask for your permission to use Smart Invert every single time. Here, the usually blindingly white Apple Store app, using Smart Invert\u2013which is not that \u2018smart\u2019 since it also inverts colors in images. But at least I can now read it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1333\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0192.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0192.jpg 1333w, https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0192-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/IMG_0192-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s missing?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The obvious one is an \u201con close\u201d action. I mean, wouldn\u2019t it be great we could ask iOS to turn Smart Invert off as soon as we stop using one of the app that requires it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s easy to imagine many, many more possibilities. The only limit here is Apple\u2019s willingness to let us automate our usage of the iPad.
