{"id":17288,"date":"2019-01-29T21:55:55","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T20:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/?p=17288"},"modified":"2019-01-29T22:33:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T21:33:31","slug":"developing-a-mindset-for-successful-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.davidbosman.fr\/en\/?p=17288","title":{"rendered":"Developing a Mindset for Successful Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My niece having started college this year, I was somewhat surprised to see how poorly students were prepared for this in school, with close&nbsp;to nothing on essential questions such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to read books and highlight meaningful passage,&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Effective note taking during a lecture.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>How to study those notes, aka how to get a personal understanding of the notions studied more than memorising them.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>How to avoid overconfidence, or the lack of.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>How to organise one\u2019s learning time, using short-and long-term goals.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>How to focus (avoid distractions).<\/li>\n<li>How to test one\u2019s comprehension.<\/li>\n<li>And, at least as important as all the others: how to deal with <em>failure<\/em>. Learning to take it for what it is\u2013a direct and sometime painful feedback on the way one has learned\u2013but nothing more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It was no better when I was a student myself, some 25-30 years ago. But one\u2019d have thought things were better nowadays, with the ever growing importance of qualification, and all the studies being made on, well, studying and being a student.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>Recently, I stumbled on Dr. Stephen Chew\u2019s \u201cHow to Study\u201d series of videos to help students \u201c<em>develop a proper mindset to become an effective learner<\/em>\u201d which is the academic way of saying \u201c<em>to help students getting good at it, without working themselves to death and even, why not, enjoying it.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fourth video, \u201c<em>Putting the Principles for Optimizing Learning into Practice<\/em>\u201d, as its title suggests, is the most practical of the series.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Some of them are covering&nbsp;basic stuff, while other, Dr.&nbsp;Stephen Chew being a professor of psychology, are dealing with more psychological matter, and not all questions are covered.
