In the Beginning was the Command Line<\/a>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Je dois \u00eatre un des rares \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir l’existence de ce texte seulement aujourd’hui (cette nuit, pour \u00eatre exact). C’est d’autant plus ridicule que c’est le titre que je venais de donner \u00e0 un de mes textes (et la raison pour laquelle je suis tomb\u00e9 dessus en faisant une recherche sur le Web). Mais je suis bon joueur, je ne tiendrai pas rigueur \u00e0 Stephenson de m’avoir piqu\u00e9<\/i> ce titre neuf ans avant que j’en aie l’id\u00e9e \ud83d\ude0e<\/p>\n\n

Je serais bien en peine de r\u00e9sumer ce texte. D’abord parce que je l’ai lu vite fait cette nuit, ensuite parce que je suis pas dou\u00e9 pour \u00e7a. Mais, il se demande ce qu’est un syst\u00e8me d’exploitation, et met en parall\u00e8le Windows, Mac (pr\u00e8-OSX,) et Unix (+ BeOS). Les consid\u00e9rations purement techniques ne sont pas loin d’\u00eatre obsol\u00e8tes (\u00e7a date d’avant OS X), sa comparaison ne colle donc plus vraiment avec les OS disponibles aujourd’hui, mais sa r\u00e9flexion reste vachement int\u00e9ressante et \u00e9tonnante (ce qui n’a rien de surprenant de la part de l’auteur de Snow Crash<\/i>). Ce qui est s\u00fbr, c’est que je ne penserai plus jamais de la m\u00eame fa\u00e7on \u00e0 Disney Land et aux Morlocks (faudra le lire pour comprendre ;-)).<\/p>\n\n

People who use such systems (“GUI OS”, like Windows or Mac) have abdicated the responsibility<\/i>, and surrendered the power, of sending bits directly to the chip that’s doing the arithmetic, and handed that responsibility and power over to the OS. This is tempting because giving clear instructions, to anyone or anything, is difficult<\/i>. We cannot do it without thinking, and depending on the complexity of the situation, we may have to think hard about abstract things, and consider any number of ramifications, in order to do a good job of it. For most of us, this is hard work. We want things to be easier. How badly we want it can be measured by the size of Bill Gates’s fortune<\/i>.<\/blockquote>\n\n

Le texte se termine sur une note tr\u00e8s enthousiaste pour BeOS qui pourrait, \u00e0 mon humble avis, \u00eatre report\u00e9e sur Mac OSX \u00e0 l’heure actuelle. <\/p>\n\n
